Restriction of the sale of devices containing Mercury:

The Fairmount Kew Station Barometer has the following features:
Construction
The barometer tube projects into the stainless-steel cistern assembly through a supporting unit which incorporates a protective cover for the cistern and also a gland. The joints between the cistern lid, Base and reservoir are sealed by gaskets.
The glass tube has a bore of 1.6 mm at the lower end but widens to 8 mm at the top where the height of the meniscus is read. An air trap in the lower half of the tube prevents any minute air bubbles from reaching the vacuum space at the top.
The glass tube is firmly held inside a cylindrical brass case, Which has two slots at the top for viewing the meniscus and for carrying a setting device and vernier. Barometer scales in hPa (mb) are engraved on one side of the front slot and protected by an outer glass cylindrical sleeve. Lower down a mercury-in-glass thermometer is mounted to show the temperature of the instrument. The barometer can be supplied with a hardwood back panel where it is mounted on a hanging bracket and steadied with a centering ring or, as illustrated, with a gimbal ring with a suspension arm and bracket for wall mounting. Supplied packed in a specially designed case with internal shock-absorbing packing.
Transporting the Fairmount Station Barometer
Fairmount Station barometers are manufactured with a "Blocking Screw" for transportation purposes. This replaces the, "Normal use screw" when the Barometer is being transported and has the function of closing the bottom of the Barometer tube thereby eliminating the possibility of air being allowed into the mercury column.
